Review of Game Change (2012) by Brian N — 11 Apr 2012
The problem with making films about historical events is that none of them are ever 100% accurate. A film is entertainment and you can never take it as its word. We can watch great history films like Patton or Glory and know they are great films, but there are flaws, so I watched this film keeping this in mind.
The interesting thing about this film is that most involved with it were not fans of Sarah Palin or John McCain, but the people on the other side. How much of this film is true and accurate can never be for sure as both sides insist on different versions of the events.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. I can imagine a portion of the stress and pressure that one goes through in such a political campaign as for president and vice president and I can see how this could be true or exaggerated.
Hannibal Hamilton once said the job of vice president was the most worthless job of all, imagine his change of opinion if Abe Lincoln hadn't dropped him from the ticket in 1864. True or not, you can feel the pressure one goes through, the stress, the contradiction.
Every moment of your life is public. I have always believed that the nomination of Sarah Palin was purely political, but that's the name of the game, for a candidate to name someone that can help get votes in areas that they may be weak.
Was Sarah Palin prepared to be a candidate? I am not sure. She made mistakes, everyone does. She was a rock star for several months, almost as big as Obama, and this film shows that, but she was number two on the ticket and may have gone a bit too far at times, but I believe that it is her nature.
We tend to forget vice presidents, an especially VP candidates, who was FDR's VP? If you have an answer, its usually Harry Truman, but he was only for about 100 days, he had two before him. No matter who you supported, no matter if you like her or hate her, Sarah Palin did change a lot of things.
We will not forget her, and the film makes that point near the end. This is worth a watch.
