Review of Gambit (2012) by Virginie D — 08 Mar 2013
A likeable update on the Gambit tale sees Colin Firth taking on the role of Harry Dean, an art expert, constantly looked down on and insulted by his employer Lionel Shabander(Rickman).
Along with the Major(Courtenay) he sets up a heist at Lionel's expense. When he plans it out it all runs very smoothly, in his mind. The execution is very different as he bumbles from one tricky situation to the next. The heist requires the services of a Texan to play the role of owner of a Monet her Father had salvaged after the second world war. In comes Cameron Diaz as PJ, very annoyingly. Sure she's quirky but the accent is quite tiresome.
What keeps this quite short film together is the Brit contigent. Stanley Tucci appears briefly as a German art expert and I'm sure this role was meant to be a bit of a show stealer but he doesn't appear enough to do this.
The chemistry between Courtenay & Firth is good bantersome fun & the ridicule from Rickman is nothing less than you would expect and it's good to see him back in this kind of role.
It's not brilliant by any stretch but it's decent untaxing fun.
