Review of Gambit (2012) by Kyle H — 10 Mar 2013
Gambit's script was clever and held great potential, but was clearly in the early stages when taken out of the Coen brothers' hands and not to the point that it could have been at. The all-star cast involved certainly did their best flesh out the characters (I was actually not bothered by any of the acting, necessarily) but could not overcome the drastic problems with direction including odd editing choices, bland transitions, a boring pace.
They also could not overcompensate for working with an underdeveloped version of a script with only one dimension written for most of the characters. Further, the tone of the movie is difficult to nail down because of the conflicting directorial and writing choices.
The story is sometimes played naturally, sometimes with heightened realism and other times as an overdramatic, wild piece. In turn, the style suffered and progressed to taint the whole production.
