Review of Gambit (2012) by David N — 13 Apr 2013
It's nothing outrageous or inventive, and Coen fans will be particularly irritated by its apparent slapsticky conventionality. But the critical mauling it's got is a bit odd. It's not *that* terrible - just a silly little comedy with Colin Firth oscillating between loveable loser and stoic everyman nicely, Cameron Diaz staying the right side of annoying as a tenacious cowgirl and Alan Rickman giving it his panto-villain best as the, er, panto villain who's mostly in control of proceedings.
Had Joel and Ethan had a more hands-on directorial role, we may have seen a slightly darker, quirkier take, but there's little room to manoeuvre in the defiantly 60s source material and so this unchallenging little flick never feels like a wasted opportunity so much as a guilty pleasure.
