Review of Galaxy Quest (1999) by Steve U — 23 Dec 2009
A great film that lovingly pokes fun at Star Trek and its excitably dedicated fanbase, Galaxy Quest actually manages to separate itself from the bonds of parody and become a thrillingly entertaining adventure in its own right.
A bunch of has-been actors meet endangered, naive aliens who have seen their old 70's sci-fi show and have mistaken them for real space warriors. By the halfway mark, one completely forgets this is a spoof as Captain Kirk clone Tim Allen (a spot-on casting choice) and his old cast find themselves in a desperate fight against an evil alien warlord.
The Captain Kirk caricature functions only as a starting point; once the star-cruising begins, Galaxy Quest is in its own realm. With the bold trumpets of David Newman's delightfully earnest space opera score, Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and the others manage to lampoon all the trademarks of modern sci-fi and yet pay loving homage to them.
By no means a deep film, this is one of those sit back and enjoy yourself at the movies experience. If you can't cheer when the heroes finally vaporize the surprisingly nasty villain, you just don't know what the movies Galaxy Quest is mocking are all about.
Scratch that... you don't know what movies are about, period.
