Review of Galaxy Quest (1999) by Jon W — 07 Aug 2013
I can appreciate this more after watching the Trek movies, but it's not necessary as I've enjoyed this movie for over ten years without that knowledge. Still, the script is intelligent, and very funny in almost every single scene ranging from the bad logic of the show having a room full of crushy things to witty lines like "miners, not minors!" The actors all play excellently both with and against type, specifically Alan Rickman as an actor pissed to be doing a sci-fi series when he'd rather be doing Shakespeare in the Park, Sigourney Weaver turning her kick-ass femininity into a character with boobs whose job it is to give fanboys a fantasy and to repeat the computer, not to mention Tim Allen as the Commander who finally snaps when he realizes everyone else on the show hates him.
There are plenty of gags that still work today, and the visual effects have always been quite excellent. There is a certain nostalgia in seeing actors like Missi Pyle, Justin Long, Rainn Wilson, Tony Shalhoub, and Sam Rockwell who we know from other roles today doing wonderful work before they were 'discovered.
' Any science fiction fan should never miss it.
