Review of Galaxina (1980) by Ola G — 18 Jun 2013
The crew of the Intergalactic Space Police cruiser Infinity is on patrol duty in deep space in the year 3008. The ship is captained by the incompetent Cornelius Butt (Avery Schreiber) and his crewmen; his first officer, Sgt. Thor (Stephen Macht); pilot "space-cowboy" Pvt. Robert "Buzz" McHenry (J.D. Hinton); and engineers, Maurice (Lionel Mark Smith) - a black humanoid alien with pointy ears and a pair of bat wings, and Sam (Tad Horino) - a Confucius-philosophy quoting Asian man. Also aboard is Galaxina (Dorothy Stratten), a voluptuous blonde-haired android servant and "Rock-Eater," a rock-eating alien prisoner confined to the brig. Eventually, the crew receive orders to proceed to the prison planet Altair One to recover a priceless stolen gemstone called the "Blue Star" - a name which spoken aloud is accompanied by an heavenly chorus from the sky much to the bewilderment of those who hear it...
"Galaxina" is a low-budget 1980 American comedy/science fiction film, best remembered for its lead actress, Playboy Playmate of the Year for 1980 Dorothy Stratten, who was brutally murdered shortly after the movie's release, causing a slight increase in attendance. Besides its homages to and parodies of science fiction movies such as "Star Wars", "Westworld", "Star Trek", "Battlestar Galactica", "Barbarella" and "Alien", this film also pokes fun at western movies. It won the Audience Award at the 1983 Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film. "Galaxina" is well, a mish mash of strange science fiction slap stick comic structures and homages and I am not sure what to think of it. As a low budget comedy I reckon they really hit the note, but it´s a bit over the top for me at least. I wonder how much dope they smoked when they wrote the script.... The gang worshipping a Harley Davidson motorcycle is well, pretty.
Strange.. I reckon it´s Dorothy Stratten who adds a little sparkle in between the weirdness. R.I.P Dorothy Stratten.
