Review of Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (2010) by Gabriel H — 06 Aug 2010
Before seeing this, all I knew of Serge Gainsbourg was that he slept with Bardot, married Birkin, fathered Charlotte Gainsbourg, and was a bit of a sleazy drunk. Most of this movie consists of him sleeping with Bardot, marrying Birkin, fathering Charlotte Gainsbourg and being a sleazy drunk.
It feels like a shame that I came out knowing not much more than I did when I went in. Impressionistic, then, more than informative. Punctuated with good performances, not least of all Kacey Mottet Klein as the young Lucien Gainsbourg.
Most of the good work is done in the early parts of the film, and by the end, it left me with a marked 'Yeah, and...?' feeling.
