Review of Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (2010) by Alex R — 18 Aug 2010
I was sadly disappointed. It felt like little snippets of his life taken from a bunch of post-it notes and placed together in order with little cohesion or point. There moments of interesting drama, but film runs it's course, and then it seems like someone said, "time's up" and the film came to a close.
I guess it was made for a French audience who are so familiar with Gainsbourg that there is probably very little that can be said that hasn't already been covered.
I also felt a little lost with the surreal aspects and could never tell if Gainsbourg was actually crazy or the director was simply having an arty moment.
The cast however is great and care had obviously been taken in casting actors who resembled the real life players and could portray their character traits.
