Review of Gabbeh (1996) by Brandon K — 03 Apr 2012
Wow. I never knew cinema in Iran had so much beauty. The scenes actually appear like paintings and the lead actress gives a bewitching performance. The only loose strings I found in the fabric of this tapestry was that the acting of some of the actors was a little stilted and the extremely long shots which become a bit tiresome.
One can watch this film purely for the sake of visual delight as the shots of lush green fields with a masked lover in the background and the shot of his hands picking her scarf and brushing away the snow is unparalleled in modern cinema.
The metaphorical cuts are intersting intepretations of the different aspects of life.
