Review of Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (2009) by Matthew B — 15 Jun 2010
The weakest of the 4 'Futurama' straight-to-DVD movies in my opinion, mainly because the story wasn't as strong as any of the previous 3, and the ending wasn't as great as it should have been. This is especially the case if it is the end of the series, which just couldn't have come close to giving closure to such a great series in the way that it did : /. The ending was very reminiscient of the "Lost in Space" movie, where the crew of the ship decide whether to go through a blackhole (wormhole in this film) or not, and Matt LeBlanc 'punching it' through (which Bender said to do here)...
The plot, was okay. Again, as I mentioned before, it was the weakest of the three, as it did little to go anywhere with the series. They were back on Mars, and Fry was the only one that could save the universe (again). Despite these downsides, I still liked it, as any & all new 'Futurama' is still 'Futurama', and tends to be better than any other slapped together straight-to-DVD movie you'd see these days (case in point, the second 'Stargate' straight-to-DVD film "Continuum", which this movie reminded me of slightly in its quality)...
Voice acting was standard 'Futurama' quality, but the guest voices in this film weren't as great as the past three films' were : / ; Snoop Dogg wasn't that good at all in his voice acting, Penn Gilish (Gellitt? The 'Penn' in "Penn & Teller") was good in the role he had (as himself), and I didn't even know Seth McFarlane was in it until I saw him listed in the guest credits, so that might tell you about his performance...
Anywho, I hope that "Futurama" comes back, despite the lackluster showing this time around, as a series -- which is where it was always its strongest. In the very least, we the fans of 'Futurama' deserve atleast a few more straight-to-DVD films to better give end to this great, great animated series, as this film didn't cut it for me as closure.
