Review of Fury (2014) by Allan C — 19 Dec 2015
I have to admit that when I first saw this poster with a WWII Brad Pitt in a film named "Fury" I was super stoked at the idea of Pitt playing a young Nick Fury leading his Howling Commandos agasint Nazi forces and the likes of Baron Strucker or Hydra.
And although I soon realized this wasn't a Marvel Universe film, this film is a smart, gritty and very tough WWII battle flick. When the writer/director is David Ayer, the audience shouldn't be surprised when they get a tough, violent films that features well developed characters.
The film follows tank commander Brad Pitt and his rag tag group of fellow tank folk as they go behind enemy lines to fight Nazis. Pitt is great in the lead and I have to grudgingly admit that Shia LaBeouf was good as well (he still bugs me though).
The film's story seemed kind of old fashioned, but it's told with a harsh and unglamorous way. Although it's a story that could easily have been lifted from a John Wayne war film, the violence and action seem more of something you'd see in "Platoon" or "Black Hawk Down.
" I think Samuel Fuller's "The Big Red One" is an apt comparison of old time storytelling paired with realistic depiction of war. Overall, this film isn't as epic as "Saving Private Ryan" or as meditative as "The Thin Red Line," but it does deserve respect for telling a small and violent tale of brave group of tank operators.
Well worth watching.
