Review of Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006) by Robert T — 19 Jan 2008
An interesting film filled with imaginary characters and wonderful metaphors! But sadly, those were eroded by the slow and confusing story and plot line. The story was there, but it slowly bloomed. The plot was a little confusing at first, and I don't think the film ever resolved it -- even toward the end.
Honestly, I was looking for a more in-depth biography on the famous photographer than her weird relationship with a character that did not contribute to the film at all. Why unmasked Robert Downey Jr.
's character toward the end when the audience were still creating a relationship with his hairy-side? The characters in the film were unique, but their relationship with the main character were still a mystery.
The score was interesting to listened to, but lack of substance. It seemed the same melody was in repeat for more than 10 times throughout the whole film. The screenplay was done very well, and it surely deserved at least an Oscar nomination -- which it didn't.
There were a few problems with the cast. Some actors fit their roles, while others needed a total makeover, ie: Robert Downey Jr. Overall, an interesting that could had been more fun and in-depth, but instead, it was depressing and confusing from beginning to end.
The film's poster was much more interesting to stare at than watching the full two-hour film!
