Review of Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006) by Dodds D — 20 Jul 2009
An under-rated film that likely suffers because it blends fact and fiction in an unusual love story that ultimately confuses Diane Arbus' place in the art world with a tale of personal awakening. Arbus' work is unique in modern photography, but under director Steven Shainberg (2002's "Secretary"), "Fur" only uses her photography as a mechanism to drive the plot.
After a few clunkers, Kidman reminds us that she is a top-tier actress, and Downey, Jr. should have garnered an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Lionel Sweeney. "Fur" is not a masterpiece, but it's got a heart, something the professional critics seem to overlook.
