Review of Funny People (2009) by Justin V — 09 Jan 2012
A strong film that may upset viewers looking for a good laugh. funny people is a title that's apt in the sense that the characters in judd apatow's third directorial film are peculiar, flawed and certainly not normal.
not a flat-out comedy, more a drama with comedic scenes there is no middle ground here. viewers will either love funny people or hate it. I enjoyed this film even though I would've liked to have seen some stronger comedy.
a friend of mine who stand-up felt that this film accurately portrayed life as a comedian and gave the viewer an inside look into how comedians live their lives and how they come up with their material.
the personal feel that apatow put forth on the screen, and the strong acting from adam sandler and especially seth rogen (who would've thought he could be more than a joe schmo?) add up to and strong film that's a but more intimate and sincere.
superbad and 40 year old virgin cannot be found anywhere here, so don't bother if that's what you're hoping for...
