Review of Funny People (2009) by Russell G — 23 Feb 2012
This is overly ambitious for a Sandler-Rogen comedy and it tried to do far too much. It feels like two movies crammed into one and they do not mix well. The first part is a likeable story about an egocentric star battling cancer and re-evaluating his empty life.
The movie comes crashing down in the second act when Sandlers character is suddenly cured and he enters an affair with a married woman. This second half only makes the characters less likable and drags on for far too long.
The first half is sincere and funny, but the second half is heavy and dysfunctional. Rogan is good and Sandler has some moments but their friendship is frustrating and never really comes together. Leslie Mann is adorable, but the story works against her character too.
Funny People loses site of what the story should have been about and only leaves you high and dry with a long and unfulfilling tangent to finish the movie.
