Review of Funny People (2009) by Irvin G — 28 Jul 2012
If you go in expecting "Virgin" or "Knocked Up", don't. Some will complain this movie is self-indulgant and nepotistic, but I beg to differ. It's structured very differently.
The first 90 minutes are there to set up the last 60. Some have complained there isn't any character development. There's plenty. It's just not very "movie" development. See, this isn't a movie about anyone's redemption or fall from grace or even about lessons - its about the differences between people behind the humour, the sadness, the heartache, and expectations of one another and how time shapes things.
Sometimes people don't learn lessons. Sometimes a second chance doesn't change them for the better. Sometimes we end up where we started and sometimes we can go back to where we want to be. I loved every inch of this movie.
It's heartwarming, heartbreaking, and oh so very true to life.
