Review of Funny People (2009) by Tosaka T — 07 Aug 2012
Funny People is a great concept stretched out over too much time. Rogan and Sandler are nothing if not capable and yet it's hard to get too invested in either's preformance when Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman and Aubrey Plaza tend to be the primary sources of laughter in this 2 and a half hour long comedy epic.
Though I must concede, Apatow does manage to make this film very emotionally impressive and both Sandler and Rogan handle their serious scenes with a great deal of dignity and grace. In the end; Funny People shows that Apatow may make a great dramatic director at some point, and he knows how/who to cast to get some serious laughs, but these skills aren't enough to make funny people as good as it could be.
