Review of Funny People (2009) by Jillian L — 25 Dec 2012
So...for a movie about stand up comedians, this wasn't very funny. Which I sort of knew going in, but this wasn't just a serious movie, it was dry. Even the majority of the stand up the characters did wasn't very funny.
The funniest stand up was Sarah Silverman's one joke. So, in that regard, I was disappointed. Also, the movie as a whole is slow and anti-climactic. It did not need to be two and a half hours long.
Adam Sandler was playing his usual manchild, but this manchild was just really sad and depressing to watch. Actually, I didn't find any of the characters likeable. I found them all annoying. Seth Rogen's was the least annoying, he was just clueless.
I will say, what I did like was the integration of real footage from Sandler's early career. I thought those were a lot of fun. Also, putting in other comedians as themselves helped make it a lot more realistic.
In my opinion, Apatow should stick to strictly comedies.
