Review of Funny People (2009) by Joyce M — 11 Feb 2013
Anyone who's seen a Hal Ashby film or knows anything about Apatow will recognize the man-love in Funny People. Tons of influence and style are evident throughout the film and is the main story telling formula that runs through this long and episodic dramedy about comedians.
If you split this up into a mini series (one following Rogen, one following Sandler, and one inconclusive finale) there'd be a lot more genius to admire. It loses most of its momentum in the third act that seems to drag on and on but it also seemed to be the necessary progression in the story.
Like or hate the ending, the first two acts were incredible. A fine balance of love and death, comedy and drama that feels so right in an Apatow directed film. And Jonah Hill steals every damn scene he's in.
Recommended for those who love Hal Ashby, James L. Brooks, or Cameron Crowe films except with a lot more dick jokes.
