Review of Funny People (1976) by Brian C — 09 Jan 2012
A failure, but not necessarily a bad failure. You can tell that there is a good movie in here waiting to get out, and that perhaps the next time Apatow attempts a comedic drama, he'll do much better.
Funny People is admirable, but hard to enjoy. Lots of laughs, but in the context of an emotional drama that fails to move or convince. The last hour is particularly unbearable. The film is long and schizophrenic in tone.
But there are enough laughs to warrant a slight recommendation.
