Review of Funny Ha Ha (2003) by Jarrod H — 28 Jan 2012
"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?", John Lydon. This movie ends as if the film stock ran out leaving the audience to decide, no speculate, on what the shape of Marnie's and Alex's relationship will be in the future.
It is inconclusive whether this is art or artifice on the writer / director's part. All major male players are 'dorks'. Marnie's best friend's boyfriend hits on her, Controlling Alex leads Marnie on, gets married in secret the next day, then wakes Marnie up in the middle of the night - yes, to hit on her.
Mitchell constantly apologises to Marnie - yes, for repeatedly and inapprpriately hitting on her. What raises this movie to above average is the naturalistic acting of Kate Dollenmayer who also appears briefly in Andrew Bujalski's 2005 flick, 'Mutual Appreciation'.
Her delivery of her wonderfully crafted lines is brilliant. It is a pity that she has made no other movies. Overall, worth watching if another movie of hapless men does not turn you off.
