Review of Funny Girl (1968) by Ching T — 29 Jul 2009
Nicky Arnstein, Nicky Arnstein! LOL...what a fantastically fun musical to experience! While the movie is incredibly enjoyable, I did chuckle throughout because it seemed like a narcissistic vehicle for the infamously ego driven and controlling Miss Streisand! She was the only one with substantial lines, scenes, numbers, etc.
Everyone else was just mere background, i.e. those gorgeous yet eerie Zeigfeld girls appear Stepford Wife-like to me because they're like lifeless statues in the "His Love Makes me Beautiful" number.
Even the insanely handsome Omar Sharif seemed stiff compared to the over the top Streisand version of Fannie. Speaking of Omar Sharif, I just couldn't buy that was Jewish with those dark exotic looks and European accent/demeanor.
Hmm, perhaps that too was for the conceit of Miss Streisand?
