Review of Funny Girl (1968) by Jerry H — 03 Mar 2010
This is the one. The movie that made Barbra Striesand a bonafide movie star, won her the Oscar for Best Actress, and changed her life forever. I know it is somewhat of a cliche to be a Stiesand fan, but there's no denying she has a magnificent voice and that she is unbelievable in her film debut.
She plays real life radio and Broadway star Fannie Brice and utters the classic line "Hello Gorgeous." Although the film is a sugared over film bio of Brice the film is so well done, the musical numbers so well staged that you would have to be made of stone not to crack a smile.
There is the beautiful song "People," the wonderful Omar Shariff as her love interest gambler Nick Arstein, and wonderful direction by the great William Wyler. One of the last great movie musicals.
ENJOY. The film was released in 1968 by Columbia Pictures and Rated G.
