Review of Funny Girl (1968) by Bonnie B — 22 Dec 2009
From the moment she utters the line "hello gorgeous" right through the film fades to black, Streisand owns this film. Every frame, every song, every moment are imbued with her persona. Ultimately this makes the film suffer, as nothing else really contributes to making the film complete.
Technically, the art direction/production design is outstanding, and the job Wyler does reminded me of the musical master Minnelli. Yet still, the enduring impact of this film is Streisand and only Streisand.
She was just incredible.
