Review of Funny Games (1997) by Arin D — 25 May 2008
For considerations of space and your mental health I have decided not to review this.. Anyway the Flixster entry is entirely wrong - this is the German version (the original - not the American frame-by-frame rework).
Director Michael Haneke plays fast and loose with the audience (us), whom he loathes as only an auteur can. See it if you care to be disquieted by your own gullibility. The point is obvious: we are complicit in the violence we watch - an idea which is droningly asserted again in his more recent film "Cache".
There is much to say about this and the fact that he decided to remake it given the original's popularity with masochistic viewers on both sides of the Atlantic. But I won't say it here.
