Review of Funny Games (1997) by Jonathan G — 25 Jan 2011
Funny Games implores the kind of off-brand satire that one may appreciate for its candidness, but likely not for its obviousness. Haneke is a craftsman -- and this film is certainly crafted delicately -- but as he has freely admitted, it's rather pointless.
And while pointless isn't always bad, it usually hinders any type of emotional investment. Such is the case here.
