Review of Funny Games (1997) by Oscar G — 18 Mar 2014
There really is no reason to see the newer version. Most people take the easy criticism of this film. "Oh this is disgusting, I mean these people have no real motivation to do what they're doing, this never happens in movies, let the family have a change.
" Oh nooo. Haneke is a genius for shoving that false notion of reality in your face and making sure you understand how silly you are. Every kind of film that would come along of that style, family under hostage or some great tragic event of the sort, hope is always implanted in the viewers mind to make them feel better.
Haneke favors reality, Haneke wants you to see what would really happen if a family was help hostage by lunatics. The truth is, there would be no hope, they're helpless. This is life, this is reality, and Haneke is very familiar with it.
