Review of Funny Farm (1988) by Whowants T — 12 Mar 2004
It's a fairly straightforward, "fish-out-of-water" tale that's predictable, but enjoyable. The characters might seem overdone at first, but they never go too far with their gags and catchlines.
..something which makes this film better than others of its kind. With the scenario decribed there's ample opportunity to really spoof around like crazy, with no concern over story. But the restraint the film shows is admirable, never allowing jokes to be stretched too far or made so utterly stupid as to become completely unentertaining.
It holds back, and that's what catches you off gaurd...enough so to make it seem like you're seeing this kind of movie for the time. Which is a point in its favor, considering everything about it could be construed as "been there, done that.
..what's next?". One other suprising thing about the film is the role of the lead actress who actually manages to steal the spotlight off of Chevy Chase. If nothing else, she makes the movie and really sets it home like a good film should.
Not to say this is the best film, or even a better film, but definately something to watch and enjoy, and maybe even laugh and talk about..
