Review of Funny Face (1932) by Ricardo V — 11 Feb 2008
I love fred astaire, he's great, he seems like one of the very few honest to god great, humble people. i'll watch his films, i'll enjoy his performance, i'll enjoy the fact he exists on celluloid, but I will not sadly enjoy this film.
audrey hepburn is not a bad actress, I can't help but believe she is an overrated actress, for some reason, maybe it's because of 'breakfast at tiff...' and 'my fair lady' she's become the poster child for every girl's fantasies, become an icon, but I believe there are so many other more talented, beautiful actresses around.
but still, she is an icon and she is not a bad actress. this is however a horrible character she plays. if I had a dime for everytime she yelled, 'BUT I'VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE!!' she says it at least eight times in this movie, and her dialogue which sounds like the screenwriter just grabbed the nearest thesaurus and crammed her dialogue with so many wordy words that she'd sound like she should be a rocket scientist, all this makes her character annoying and highly unconventional.
that alas is the biggest drawback to the film. her character is annoying. the music is not memorable, but alas there is astaire. I love the guy and I love his matador dance routine it's wonderful, I love the fact it was filmed in paris, I just wish they had made a different film with all these great parts that were going for it.
