Rarely do we see a Post WWI era flick and I think it's great how the science/magic mix turned out. Granted, I'm seeing the end of the series, but we'll now have to look into seeing the series.
Overall, I think Newcomers will understand about half of it. Highly recommended for fans of Anime as a whole. Those that don't like strange monsters will probably not dig this film.
