Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by David L — 05 May 2018
A film of two halves, with the first being far superior to the second. As the cadets are put through their paces at a strict training camp, we witness the gruelling nature of what it could possibly have felt like being at the mercy of a sadistic sergeant major.
You'd like to hope that the scenes are exaggerated for our entertainment value, but I suspect there is an underlying truth about how the events had the potential to pan out in those days. In the 2nd half, we witness the boys in real life combat in the Vietnam war.
On paper, this should have been better, more action, more blood, and more drama, however it didn't materialise. Whether I just felt bewildered by what seemed a completely new cast or whether I was completely sidetracked from giving it my full attention, it just felt very anticlimactic in comparison.
