I ossicilte between loving this film and disliking it immensely. It just doesn't compare, for me, to other great war films (Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter) and though Matthew Modine has never been better, he was never the right decision to carry a movie of this weight.
Stil, it's better than most.
