Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by Peter W — 28 Apr 2012
What's amazing about this film is that it was made in England and it's so well done, you wouldn't even think it, the scenes look so real and a great move by the English Director. Full Metal Jacket is not a realistic film -- it is horror-comic superrealism, from a God's-eye view -- but it should fully engage the ordinary movie grunt.
The performances are brilliant and Kubrick again uses long shots making the scenes more engaging. The film feels like two movies, the hardship of creating a killing machine and training, while the other half sticks you in the heart of war and sometimes loss and a natural element: fear.
The dark humour is slight but if you notice it, it'll make you smile. Great performance from Vincent D'Onofrio as Gomer Pyle, as the builled private. This film focuses more on human side of things than actual war.
..but this one of the best war films ever made.
