Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by James S — 14 May 2012
Whenever this movie is brought up in conversation, it is usually due to the first forty-five minutes or so of the film which is set in a Marine Corps boot camp. That first section really is the best part of the film and as a whole is perfect.
Afterwards, the film slows down as the troops enter Vietnam and experience the horrors of war. While this part of the film is great, it doesn't say anything too new about the nature of war and what it does to men.
Most people recommend just the first half of the film, but I'm going to tell recommend watching the whole thing. After boot camp, you really begin to get attached to the characters, and it makes the last half of the movie that much more interesting and gripping.
A great film by Stanley Kubrick, and a classic of the genre.
