Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by James R — 17 May 2013
A great look at a group of marines during the Vietnam War. Starting from the hell they go through at basic to the actual war. The films first half taking place at basic is a 5/5 film. R Lee Ermey as the drill instructor was point on and one of the most memorable performances I've ever seen.
The movie then moves to Vietnam were I liked the realism, but I just didn't find it fit as tightly as the first half. We follow Joker from basic and when we see him in Vietnam he meets back up with one of his friends from basic.
From there it's a little random with two firefights that break out and then the end. The movie does give off the theme about how war is hell and there's really no meaning to a lot of it. The main guys are just everyday normal people that got caught up in a very violent job.
Overall, a great Kubrick film and I highly recommend checking it out.
