Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by Ivan M — 03 May 2012
It is a film which seems strangely uneven. The opening half of the film promises to be some of Kubrick's best work, yet afterwards, the film descends into a series of empty one-liners and typical sequences.
While, granted, the second segment does posess many examples of Kubrick's great direction, and the fact that the entire film was shot in East London is impressive, but the fact remains that in showing the young men being brainwashed into emotionless killers in the first segment, the knock-on effect is irritating two-dimensional characters who prevent the message of the film from effecting us emotionally.
A well-made film, and far from being a bad film, however as a Kubrick film it leaves you with a small sense of disappointment.
