Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by Laurence B — 28 Apr 2013
I would say its not among his (Kubrick) "greatest" films ever, but I think its up there as the best war flick. Brilliant roles performed brilliantly by a brilliant cast. Contrapuntal music was used exquisitely at the most appropriate pin-points within the film, perhaps making the film more enjoyable yet aesthetically intriguing when juxtaposed next to the brutality of war.
Story seemed better and much stronger in earlier stages of film, as I really cared more of the outcome of the first part, in comparison to the second part. Laurence in particular, struck a chord which plucked violently in a penultimate scene - as you really build up a weird empathy while in training process, but a subtle twist begins to lurk underneath, which made him the most interesting character, in the most interesting part of the film, as no other war-flick has delved into this side of the pre-war quite like Full Metal Jacket.
Great Film.
