Review of Full Metal Jacket (1987) by Richard N — 13 Apr 2015
Of all Kubrick's films I have to admit this being probably my least favorite. I'm not sure exactly why, perhaps it's the subject matter, but it just didn't have the same impact on me as most of his other movies.
It's an accomplished piece of film-making, that almost goes without saying of course, and R Lee Ermey's performance is outstanding, but overall I wasn't as engaged, and felt unable to get too emotionally involved with any of the characters.
Because it's a Kubrick picture I must admit I almost felt slight guilt, like it was a failing on my part, perhaps I was missing something? His films do tend to grow on you, so another viewing might be in order at some point, and maybe then I'll be swayed.
6/10.
