Review of Fugitive Pieces (2008) by Jonathan H — 01 Dec 2008
It's a joy to stumble upon a film, not knowing much about it, and then be pleasantly surprised by its wonderfulness. I really liked this film.
Hearing some of the words read from Jakob's journal, both my wife and I commented on how good the poetry sounded. Well, turns out the novel was written by a poet - go figure.
This film was lyrical, spacious, and patient. It has just as much to do with sights, sounds, and pacing as it does story, narrative, and characters. I have not read the book, and I am told the latter part is quite different, but for me, the film succeeds.
The characters felt real, felt decent, felt noble, and felt flawed. You should check out this movie. I don't know if I'd call it inspirational or uplifting - that can sometimes be a product of sentimentality. Rather, I'd say this film is hopeful - it makes you root for hope to win out in life.
