Coogler's directorial debut is no cinematic masterpiece but it's an excellent first feature. It doesn't really find its passion until the third act, but that's not surprising given the subject matter.
The film's real accomplishments are the performances by Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, and of course Octavia Spencer.
