Review of Fruitvale Station (2013) by Alec B — 17 Jan 2014
At first glance, the film's ordinariness seems a liability (the cold open includes the real footage of the the moments right before the shooting, which concerned me because what film could rival the horror of that reality?) but then it becomes clear that Coogler's point is that the greatest tragedy in the death of Oscar Grant was that he was a relatively ordinary person.
Its a simple statement, but a powerful one.
