Review of Fruitvale Station (2013) by X X — 26 Jan 2014
The hype is true. More than an enslaved man reclaiming his freedom or an astronaut finding her way back to life, this was the most resonant story to hit screens in 2013. Maybe it's about the despairing battle between everyday goodness and everyday evil, or the ageless injustice of brutal authority and the hope of redemption through seeing each other as human beings, or the sort of cosmic unfairness that sours our attempts to lead moral lives; but how you read the film almost doesn't matter.
The reality and timelessness of the story supersedes all that. There is not a stomach-turning beat in the film that is not, in some way, True.
