Portraying his life as an everyman, with hopes and goals and attempts to make amends for his mistakes and disappointments, is what connects the viewer to Oscar and causes the outrage at the senseless injustice of his murder and the corruption and prejudice of the system that allows it to continue to happen without severe consequence.
