Review of Frozen River (2008) by Sv G — 10 Apr 2009
The story of two women really - struggling to survive financially in Massena, NY bordering Canada. One is a young Mohawk woman who has been widowed and the other a woman with two children at home and a husband that robs and leaves them a week before Christmas because he has a gambling problem.
The two woman begin to smuggle people over the border together to help make ends meet. This could have been so much more than it was. Though an interesting story I don't think it began to explore or examine or bring to the forefront all it could have here with 2 hrs to do so.
The very good performance of "Ray" the mother of two children played by Melissa Leo and that of her eldest son played by Charlie McDermott is what I enjoyed most here.
