Review of Frozen River (2008) by Dane M — 11 Apr 2009
Solid characters (but besides Melissa Leo, only a couple solid performances) tell a good, but bleak, story of desperation. Its rough but not unwatchable and although it has twists you expect from a manipulative film, the generally hands-off directing approach doesnt make it feel so manipulative.
That said, the film is not much to look at. So overall competent direction buoyed by a good story and some great acting.
