Review of Frozen River (2008) by Jonathan H — 09 Sep 2009
Melissa Leo delivers an excellent performance in a movie that is only slightly above average. First time director Hunt does an excellent job of capturing the cold harsh landscape and giving an edge to the tense smuggling scenes.
Unfortunately every other scene is lacking. Most of the interactions between people seem very unnatural. Everybody is hostile towards the main character for seemingly no reason, if only to make her situation appear more bleak and depressing.
The acting aside from Leo is poor. I was happy that this movie was not preachy about immigration laws. The movies final moments are what make it worthwhile.
