Review of Frozen River (2008) by Harry T — 27 Dec 2009
In spite of some uneven narrative arcs, the film is wrought with great performances. Gut-wrenching at times and surprising with the moral questions it raises. It also boasts a great opening sequence, with some lovely still shots and the introduction to the main character amidst frustration.
To the film's credit, it never preaches or passes judgement on the characters involved. One never feels compelled to dismiss particular choices as immoral, but sees them in a context of desperation and deep sadness.
I think the film could have benefitted from a few extra scenes, namely to solidify the relationship between Lila and Ray. While I had no problem believing their choices, I did feel that they were a little disparate, especially in regards to each other.
A wonderful, sad film that won't leave your memory for quite some time.
