Review of Frozen River (2008) by Daisy M — 07 Mar 2010
This movie tells of two single mothers who are desperately trying to make ends meet. One is Ray Eddy, portrayed brilliantly by Melissa Leo (she got nominated for Best Actress in the 2009 Oscars). She is trying to buy a new trailer home for her and her two sons but the savings was taken by her gambling husband and he is never been seen since then. The other one is Lila Littlewolf, a widowed Mohawk portrayed by Misty Upham. Lila is trying to take back her son of 1-year-old that was being 'stolen' by her mother-in-law at his birth, but is unable at the moment because of her bad financial status. Ray meets Lila while she is searching for her husband and both of them formed an uneasy alliance to traffic illegal immigrants from Canada into the US.
With this kind of a plot, I was a bit scared near the end of the movie because of the impending ending. Desperation that leads to a decision that one will regret. That was an enough reason to make this movie hard to watch. Their portrayals of both of the characters were so real, I was beginning to lose morale towards the ending. That shows the acting is awesome. Some movies do influence you. And those movies are just one of a kind. The kind that smacks you in the face. But they feel awesome!
