Melissa Leo is fantastic in this modest movie about smuggling illegal immigrants into the US from... Canada! Courtney Hunt crafts an excellent story, forcing us to find ways to believe that smuggling illegals is ok.
The conflicts for our lead run deep, and watching her struggle to make the best of her economic situation is what makes this an indie gem. The resolution of "Frozen River" is interesting, as it's very in between endings we usually get in cinematic outings.
